500 Highway 55, Medina, MN (about 20 minutes drive west of downtown Minneapolis).

Please note: Due to liquor licensing issues at the venue, we must ask everyone to leave flasks at home.

Dinner will be a buffet featuring ham, chicken with wild rice, a vegetarian pasta dish, and various side dishes.

A registration form is available online. Registration deadline is 14 February 2004. Registration after that date incurs an extra $5 fee.

Accommodations: Hospitality is available for out of town guests in the homes of local dancers. Contact the ball registrar for information.

Alternately, accomodation is available at the Medina Inn hotel, adjoining the Medina Ballroom. To make reservations contact the hotel at 763-478-9770.

Other Activities: A ball practice will be held on Friday, 27 February from 7:30 to 10pm at Tapestry Folkdance Center.

A walk-through of the ball program will take place on the day of the ball from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Medina Ballroom (changing facilities are available on site, so no need to go home to change).

Pre-ball bowling is available at the Medina ballroom starting at noon. Bowling is $4.25. Shoe rental is $2.50.

There will be a ceilidh after dinner at the Medina Ballroom. Please contribute a song, poem, dance, skit, or other act. A piano will be available, for any acts that require it, and there will be munchies for the audience. Contact Eric Dam (e-mail: edam523 [at] aol.com) if you would like to contribute an act to the ceilidh.

Bring your extra cash, because as a fund-raiser for the branch, there will be a silent auction and raffle during the ceilidh. Contact Cassandra Olson if you have an item to contribute (e-mail: cdolson [at] charter.net).

There will be a potluck brunch on Sunday morning beginning at 10:30am, at the home of Janet and Stuart McKernan. Directions will be available at the ball.

1-4 1C dance in and cast to 2nd place (2C steps up on bars 3-4).
5-8 1C dance half reels of 3, 1W with 2C, 1M with 3C. 1C finish in 2nd place on partner's side.
9-12 1C dance down between 3C and cast up to 2nd place.
13-16 1C dance half reels of 3, 1M with 2C, 1W with 3C. 1C finish in 2nd place on own side.
17-24 2C and 1C rights and lefts.
25-32 1C dance down between 3C and cast up to 2nd place. All turn partner RH.

Mrs. Stewart's Jig

1-8 1C set and then 1W, followed by her partner, cast off below 3C. 1W dances up behind the men's line while 1M dance up the middle to finish in 2nd place on partner's side, facing down. 2C steps up on bars 7-8.
9-16 2C, 1C, 3C Grand Chain. 2M & 1M omit the polite turn to finish facing out.
17-24 2C & 1C Ladies' Chain.
25-32 2C, 1C, 3C advance and retire. 1C turn RH 1 ½ to finish on own sides in 2nd place.

Lord Elgin's Reel

1-4 1M and 2W set and turn BH
5-8 1W and 2M set and turn BH
9-16 1C lead down, cross below 2C, dance behind 3C, lead up to the top, and cross and cast to face 1st corners.
17-24 1C turn 1st corners RH, pass each other by right shoulder, turn 2nd corners LH, pass each other by left shoulder, finishing 1W between 2C, all facing down and 1M between 3C, all facing up.
25-32 All advance one step and retire one step twice. 1C turn 1 1/4 RH to 2nd place on own sides.

The Full Monty

32 R 3C Drewry/Greenburn
1-8 1C, 2C, 3C mirror reels of 3, 1C dancing out and down, 2C in and up to begin.
9-10 1C and 2C continue the reel for 2 more bars to change places, 1C dancing out and down, 2C in and up.
11-12 1C turn RH and finish facing out.
13-16 1C cast to their left and in through the ends of the set. Finish 1C left shoulder to left shoulder, 1M facing 2W, 1W facing 3M (i.e. 2nd corners).
17-20 1C join left hands and set to 2nd corners, then drop hands and turn towards each other finish facing partner's 2nd corner. With right hands joined, set to partner's 2nd corner and rotate 1/4 CCW (i.e. "backwards") to face 1st corners.
21-24 With right hands joined, 1C set to 1st corners, then drop hands and turn towards each other to finish facing partner's 1st corner. With left hands joined, set to partner's 1st corner, then drop hands and move to finish 1W facing down, 1M facing up.
25-32 Corners pass and turn variation: 1C dance around 2nd corner, pulling right shoulder back to face 1st corners (2nd corners turn each other RH and dance back to place); 1C dance around 1st corners and into 2nd place facing out, ready to begin again.
Note: At the end of the 2nd repetition, 1W give RH to 4W and 1M give LH to 4M to turn them up into the reel of 3 with the top two couples.

MacDonald of the Isles

32 S 3C set Carnforth 2
1-8 2C pass each other left shoulders to dance a diagonal reel of 4 with 1st corners, finishing by dancing around each other by the left shoulder to face 2nd corners.
9-16 2C dance a diagonal reel of 4 with 2nd corners.
17-24 Progressive grand chain: 1C cross RH (2 bars), 1C change places LH with 2C (2 bars), 1C change places RH with 3C while 2C cross RH (2 bars), 1C cross LH while 2C and 3C change places LH (2 bars).
25-28 3C and 2C dance half rights and lefts.
29-32 3C dance half a figure of eight, 1M up around 2C, 1W down around 2C.

Hanna's Pride

32 J 3C Dunsmuir
1-8 1C set and cast to 2nd place; 1C dance down between 3C and cast up, finishing left shoulder to left shoulder ready for . . .
9-12 RH across, 1W with 2C, 1M with 3C. 1C finish facing their 1st corner.
13-24 "Quarries' Jig" formation: Middle couple change places RH with 1st corners while 2nd corners set; dancers now in the middle change places with each other LH while the corners while corners dance one place CW; Repeat the pattern two more times to finish as in bar 13.
25-32 Interrupted hello-goodbye setting (a.k.a. "set and bawk"): 1C set to 1st corners, pulling back right shoulder to face partner across the set on the 2nd pas de basque; 1C turn RH to face 2nd corners. 1C set to 2nd corners, pulling back right shoulder to face partner up and down the set on the 2nd pas de basque; 1C turn RH to 2nd place on own sides.

The Lammermuir Hills

32 S 2C Goldring/Wells House
1-8 1C and 2C poussette right round.
9-12 1W and 2M cross RH and cast around partner to original places.
13-16 1C and 2C RH across.
17-20 1M and 2W cross LH and cast around partner to original places.
21-24 1C and 2C LH across.
25-32 1C and 2C change places with the knot.

Flowers of Edinburgh

32 R 3C RSCDS 1
1-8 1W, followed by her partner cast off and dance below 3C. 1W dance up behind men's line, 1M up the middle of the set to finish in partner's place (6 bars). 1C set.
9-16 1C repeat bars 1-8 with 1M leading his partner and 1W dancing up the middle to original positions.
17-24 1C down the middle and up.
25-32 1C and 2C change places with the poussette.

Joie de Vivre

32 J 3C RSCDS 39
1-4 1C set and cast to 2nd place (2C step up on bars 3-4).
5-8 1C dance down between 3C and cast up to 2nd place.
9-16 All turn partner RH and chase halfway.
17-20 All dance back-to-back with partner.
21-24 All set and turn partner RH halfway, staying in the middle ready for . . .
25-32 3-couple allemande.

Rose of the North

32 S 3C Goldring/Leeds Silver Jubilee
1-4 1C lead down below 3C, cross and cast up to 2nd place on partner's side (2C step up on bars 3-4).
5-16 2C, 1C, 3C dance 3-couple rights and lefts, 1C finishing facing 1st corners.
17-24 1C set to and turn corners, 1C finishing back to back, 1W facing down, 1M facing up.
25-28 1W with 3C, 1M with 2C, circle 3 hands round to the left, 1C pulling right shoulders back to face each other up and down the set at the end.
29-32 1C set and petronella to 2nd place.

Kiss of the Humming Bird

32 J 3C NY Millenium
1-4 1C turn RH and cast to 2nd place.
5-8 1C "half turn and twiddle": Turn RH halfway, then drop hands dance and turn over right shoulder dance out to opposite side. 1C finish facing out.
9-12 1C cast around 1st corner to finish in 2nd place on own side facing out.
13-16 All turn partner RH once around, flowing into . . .
17-24 Reels of 3 on the sides, 1W and 3W, 1M and 2M passing right shoulders to begin, 1C finishing 1W between 2C facing down, 1M between 3C facing up.
25-28 1C petronella while 2C and 3C cross RH. All set on the sides.
29-32 All "half turn and twiddle" to finish on own sides.

Snow on the Mountain

32 J 3C Friedman~Shedlov
1-4 1C cross RH and cast to 2nd place.
5-8 1C dance half figures of 8, 1W up around 2W, 1M down around 3M. 1C finish by dancing into the middle of the set and pulling right shoulders back to end back-to-back facing out own side.
9-16 Petronella double triangles: 1C set as in double triangles. On bars 15-16, 1C rotate 1/4 to finish 1W facing up, 1M facing down. Corners set on bars 15-16, petronella one place to the right on bars 17-18, and repeat to finish in diagonally opposite position.
17-20 1W with 3C, 1M with 2C dance RH across. 3M and 2W finish facing out.
21-24 3M, followed by 3W and 1W, and 2W, followed by 2M and 1M, chase CW halfway, flowing into . . .
25-32 Circle 6 hands round and back.

Argyll Strathspey

32 S 3C RSCDS 35
1-8 1C, 2C, and 3C "half turn and twiddle": Turn RH halfway, then drop hands and turn over right shoulder to dance out to partner's side. Repeat to finish in original positions.
9-16 Circle 6 hands round and back, 1C and 3C finishing facing up and down the set.
17-24 1C and 3C dance rights and lefts up and down the set.
25-32 1C and 2C change places with the tournée.

White Heather Jig

40 J 4C set Cosh
1-8 1C turn RH and cast off (2C step up on bars 3-4). 1C turn LH 1 1/2, moving up to finish back-to-back between 2C.
9-16 1C and 2C dance a reel of 4 across the set. 1C pass right shoulders to finish facing 1st corners.
17-24 1C turn corner, partner, corner partner, finishing back-to-back between 3C, 1M facing 3W, 1W facing 3M.
25-32 1C and 3C dance a reel of 4, 1C giving LH as they pass at the end. 3C finish in 2nd place.
33-40 1C turn LH and cast off on own sides to 4th place (4th couple stepping up). 1C turn RH.

Round Reel of Eight

88 R 4C Quadrille RSCDS 27
1-8 Women cast behind partner and dance around the set to original places.
9-16 Men repeat bars 1-8. All finish facing partner.
17-32 All dance half a grand chain in six bars, then set to partner. Repeat to original positions.
33-40 1C and 3C dance across the set, 1C dancing between 3C; 1C and 3C dance back to original places, 3C dancing between 1C, finishing by turning RH into allemande hold.
41-48 1C and 3C promenade around the inside of the set CCW to original places.
49-64 2C and 4C repeat bars 33-48, 2C dancing between 4C to begin.
65-80 1C and 3C dance half rights and lefts. 2C and 4C repeat. All repeat to original places.
81-80 All circle 8 hands round and back.
