RSCDS - Twin Cities Branch 8th Annual Fàilte Ball

What is It?: "Fàilte" means welcome in Gaelic, and all Scottish dancers, beginners and experienced, are most welcome! The Fàilte Ball is intended to be a gentle introduction to the ball scene for newer dancers, and a fun night for all. Enjoy a scrumptious dessert buffet, live music, and dancing in a semi-formal setting. Never been to a ball before and not sure what to expect? Check out our guide for the neophyte ball-goer and then grab your ghillies and join us on the dance floor.
Place: Barton Open School
4237 Colfax Avenue South, Minneapolis
(on Colfax Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Street)
Music: Thistledown (Anne Benson, Sherry Ladig, Pat O'Loughlin, and Ken Steffenson)
Tickets: $17.00
A discount of $5 is offered to students and those who are attending their first Scottish country dance ball.
Tickets for non-dancers are $5 (includes dessert buffet and live music).

Accomodations: Hospitality is available for out of town guests.
Other Activities:
  • There will be a ball walkthrough at 7:30pm on Friday, December 3, at Olivet Congregational Church in St. Paul.
  • There will be a ball practice on Saturday, December 4, starting at 9am at the Tapestry Folkdance Center.
  • There will be a potluck"after-glow" party at the home of Sherry Gwegorryn. Bring a dish to share. Directions to Sherry's will be available at the ball.
  • Widdershins and Cecil's Harp, bands formed by Ames, Iowa Scottish country dancers Linda and Gary Lieberman and friends, will offer a Post-Fàilte Ball Concert of Scottish and English music at Kilted Coffee on Sunday, starting at 1pm. Kilted Coffee is located at 1410 Nicollet Avenue South in Minneapolis.

16 March 1C
1-4 In allemande hold, walk forward four steps CCW around the circle. Turn and face the other direction and walk backwards (CCW) four steps.
5-8 Repeat bars 1-4 going CW.
9-12 Woman turns under the man’s arm while the couple continues to move around the circle.
13-16 Polka, moving around the circle.


Alyth Promenade
8x32 J 3C variation of Goldring's Ayr Promenade
1-4 1W, 2W, 3W dance around partner and back to place, passing them by the right shoulder.
5-8 All turn partner RH.
9-12 1M, 2M 3M repeat bar 1-4.
13-16 All repeat bars 5-8, finishing in the center, facing up.
17-24 All dance a 3-couple promenade.
29-32 1C cross RH, cast to 2nd place, and turn RH 1 1/2.


Seann Triubhas Willichan
6x32 S 2C RSCDS 27
1-8 1C cast down the outside of the set and back to place.
9-12 1W & 2M set and cross RH while 2W & 1M cross RH and set.
13-16 Repeat bars 9-12 back to original places.
17-24 1C lead down for 2 bars, turn RH for 2 bars, lead up for 2 bars, and cast into 2nd place.
25-28 2C & 1C set and turn partners with both hands.
29-32 2C & 1C circle four hands round to the left.


Shiftin' Bobbins
8x32 R 3C Ormskirk VI
1-4 1C CROSS DOWN RH to double triangle positions (2C steps up). 2C, 1C, 3C SET.
5-8 1C CAST UP on wrong sides, meet at the top of the set and DANCE DOWN between 2C and 3C.
9-12 1W with 2M and 3M dance RIGHT HANDS ACROSS and at the same time 1M with 2W and 3W dance LEFT HANDS ACROSS.
13-16 1C meet and DANCE DOWN the middle, followed by 2C and 3C who continue the wheels until they meet their partners.
17-20 3C, followed by 2C and 1C DANCE UP. On bars 23-24, 3C cast back to 3rd place and 2C dance up to 1st place.
21-24 1W with 2M and 3M dance LEFT HANDS ACROSS and at the same time 1M with 2W and 3W dance RIGHT HANDS ACROSS.
25-28 1C meet and DANCE UP to the top of the set and CAST to 2nd place.
29-32 1C dance a HALF FIGURE OF EIGHT around 2C.


Kendall's Hornpipe
8x32 J 2C RSCDS Graded
1-8 1C and 2C dance RIGHTS AND LEFTS.
9-16 1C LEAD DOWN the middle for 3 bars, UP for 3 bars, CROSS and CAST to 2nd place on opposite sides.
17-24 2C and 1C dance a LADIES' CHAIN.
25-32 2C and 1C ADVANCE AND RETIRE. 1C TURN RH 1 1/2 to own sides.


Monymusk
8x32 S 3C RSCDS 11
1-4 1C turn RH and cast to 2nd place.
5-8 1C turn LH 1 1/4 to finish 1W between 2C facing down, 1M between 3C facing up.
9-12 Set in lines of 3 across the dance. On bars 11-12, 1C dance a petronella turn to finish in 2nd place on partner's side of the set.
13-16 All set twice.
17-24 2C, 1C, 3C circle six hands round and back.
25-32 1C pass 1st corner right shoulder to dance six-bar reels of three on the sides. 1C cross RH to own sides on bars 31-32.


Postie’s Jig
4x32 J 4C Ormskirk V
1-8 1C, 4C SET. 1C CAST down and dance a HALF FIGURE OF 8 around 2C while 4C CAST up and dance a HALF FIGURE OF 8 around 3C.
9-10 1W & 4W, 1M & 4M join nearer hands and dance across, LADIES UNDER MEN’S ARCH.
11-12 1C, 4C TURN THE CORNERS by the free hand to finish 1C btw 2C facing down and 4C btw 3C facing up.
13-16 REPEAT bars 9-12 up and down the set (couple coming up make the arch).
17-24 REPEAT bars 9-16 to finish in order 2C, 1C, 4C, 3C with 1C and 4C on wrong sides.
25-28 1C & 4C HALF RIGHTS & LEFTS.
29-32 4C, 1C TURN RH.


De'il Amang the Tailors

1-4 1C and 2C set and dance right hands across halfway.
5-8 1C and 2C set and dance left hands across back to original places.
9-16 1C lead down the middle and up.
17-24 1C and 2C allemande..
29-32 2C, 1C, 3C circle six hands round and back.


St. Bernard's Waltz
16 Waltz 1C Traditional Ceilidh
1-4 In ballroom hold, moving towards the lady's right, step-together, step-together, step-together, then lightly stamp both feet.
5-6 Moving in the opposite direction, step-together, step-together.
7-8 Take two steps towards the center of the room (lady heading forwards with right foot then left foot, man backwards with left foot then right).
9-10 Take two steps back out (same feet).
11-12 Lady turns about on the spot under the man's left arm.
13-16 Waltz onwards round the room.


I'll Mak Ye Fain to Follow Me
8x32 J 3C RSCDS 6
1-4 1W casts off two places on her own side, followed by 1M to finish on opposite sides below 3C.
5-8 1M casts up behind 3W and 2W, followed by 1W, and back to places at the top.
9-12 1C cross RH and cast to 2nd place. 2C step up.
13-16 1C cross LH and cast to 3rd place, then lead up to finish facing 1st corners.
17-24 1C set to and turn corners.
25-32 1C dance six-bar reels of 3 on the sides with corners, giving left shoulder to 1st corner to begin. 1C cross RH to own sides on bars 31-32.


Dalkeith's Strathspey
8x32 S 3C RSCDS 9
1-4 1C with NHJ, set to 2W and dance 3 hands around to the left with her. Finish facing 2M.
5-8 repeat bars 1-4 with 2M..
9-16 1C down the middle and up, finishing back-to-back in the middle of the set facing 2C (2C step up on 11-12).
17-24 2C and 1C reel of 4 across the top of the set. 1C finish facing 1st corner
25-32 1C turn CPCP, finishing in 2nd place on own sides.


Trip to Gatlinburg
8x32 J 3C S. Tang
1-8 1C and 2C dance RH across and LH back.
9-16 1W, followed by 2W and 3W, dance across the top of the set and behind 1M. 1W and 3W weave in front of 2M, and behind 3M, while 2W takes the shortcut, dancing straight down behind the men's line (without weaving in front of 2M), so that she passes 1W and leads the other two dancers back across the set and up the women's side to finish in the order 2W, 1W, 3W.
17-24 Men repeat bars 9-16, with 1M and 3M weaving in front of the woman in 2nd place, while 2M takes the shortcut and ends up in the lead to finish in the order 2M, 1M, 3M.
25-32 All circle 6 hands round and back.


Corn Rigs
8x32 R 2C RSCDS 4
1-8 1C cast down for 4 bars, turn inwards and dance back up to original places.
9-16 1C dance a figure of eight around 2C.
17-24 1C down the middle and up.
25-32 1C & 2C poussette to change places.


Saint John River
4x32 S 4C New Brunswick
1-8 1W, followed by 1M, cast behind 2W, dance across the set and down behind 3M, across the set and down behind 4W.
9-16 1C dance up under arch made by 4C, turn 1 1/2 with both hands, and dance up to original places under arch made by 2C.
17-24 1C, followed by 2C, 3C, and 4C lead down the set. When 4C reach the top of the set, they cast off to own places followed by 3C, 2C, and 1C.
25-32 All dance back-to-back. 1C face down and chain down the sidelines, giving RH to 2C, LH to 3C and RH to 4C to end in 4th place.


Reel of the 51st Divison
8x32 R 3C RSCDS 13
1-8 1C set to each other and cast off two places (2C moves up on 3-4). 1C meet below the 3rd couple and lead up the middle to face 1st corners.
9-12 1C set to 1st corners and turn them RH, finishing by joining LH with partner, forming a diagonal line.
13-14 Balance in line.
15-16 1C (leaving first corners in place) turn 1 1/4 LH to face 2nd corners.
17-22 Repeat bars 9-14 with 2nd corners.
23-24 1C turn LH to own sides in 2nd place.
25-32 2C, 1C, and 3C six hands round and back.
