RSCDS - Twin Cities Branch 6th Annual Fàilte Ball

What is It?: "Fàilte" means welcome in Gaelic, and all Scottish dancers, beginners and experienced, are most welcome! The Fàilte Ball is intended to be a gentle introduction to the ball scene for newer dancers, and a fun night for all. Enjoy a scrumptious dessert buffet, live music, and dancing in a semi-formal setting. Never been to a ball before and not sure what to expect? Check out our guide for the neophyte ball-goer and then grab your ghillies and join us on the dance floor.
Place: Barton Open School
4237 Colfax Avenue South, Minneapolis
(on Colfax Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Street)

Tickets: $15.00
A discount of $5 is offered to those who are attending their first Scottish country dance ball.
Tickets for non-dancers are $5.

Other Activities:
  • There will be a ball walkthrough on Friday, December 6, 7:30 p.m. at Olivet Congregational Church (1850 Iglehart in St. Paul).
  • There will be a ball practice on Saturday, December 7, starting at 10 a.m. at the Tapestry Folkdance Center.
  • There will be a potluck"after-glow" party at the home of Sherry Gwegorryn. Bring a dish to share. Directions to Sherry's will be available at the ball.

Gay Gordons
16 March (couple dance)
1-4 In allemande hold, walk forward four steps CCW around the circle. Turn and face the other direction and walk backwards (CCW)four steps.
5-8 Repeat bars 1-4 going CW.
9-12 Woman turns under the man’s arm while the couple continues to move around the circle.
13-16 Polka, moving around the circle.


Circassian Circle
32 R (mixer)
All form a circle and face in, with ladies to the right of their partner
1-4 Hands joined in a circle, all advance and retire.
5-8 Repeat bars 1-4.
9-12 Drop hands. Women advance and retire.
13-16 Men advance, then turn and dance out to the next woman CW (the woman who was originally on their left).
17-24 All spin with new partners
25-32 All promenade CCW around the room.


Flowers of Edinburgh
8x32 R 2C RSCDS 1
1-8 1W, followed by 1M CAST DOWN behind 2W and 3W; 1W crosses and casts up behind 3M and 2M while 1M dances up the middle, both finishing in partner's place (6 bars); 1C set
9-16 REPEAT bars 1-8 with 1M leading the cast and 1W dancing up the middle to finish in original places.
17-24 1C DOWN THE MIDDLE AND UP..
25-32 1C and 2C POUSSETTE.


Machine Without Horses
8x32 J 3C RSCDS 12
1-4 1C set and cast off to 2nd place.
5-8 1C and 3C right hands across.
9-12 1C set and cast up to top place.
13-16 1C and 2C left hands across.
17-24 1C, followed by 2C, lead down between 3C, divide and cast up behind 3C, lead up to the top and cast off to 2nd place while 2C dance into top place.
25-32 2C and 1C rights-and-lefts.


Dalkeith's Strathspey
8x32 S 3C RSCDS 9
1-4 1C with NHJ, set to 2W and dance 3 hands around to the left with her. Finish facing 2M.
5-8 repeat bars 1-4 with 2M..
9-16 1C down the middle and up, finishing back-to-back in the middle of the set facing 2C (2C step up on 11-12).
17-24 2C and 1C reel of 4 across the top of the set. 1C finish facing 1st corner
25-32 1C turn CPCP, finishing in 2nd place on own sides.


Barley Bree
4x40 J 4C  set RSCDS 13
1-8 All advance and retire. Women dance under men's arches to change places with partner.
9-16 Repeat to end in original places, women making the arches.
17-20 1C turn RH 1 1/2 , moving down to end between 2C.
21-24 1M turn 2W LH while 1W turns 2M LH (2 bars). 1C turn RH.
25-32 1M turn 3W LH while 1W turns 3M LH (2 bars). 1C turn RH.

1M turn 4W LH while 1W turn 4M LH. 1C turn RH to own sides and form an arch.

33-40 2C, followed by 3C and 4C cast off and dance down to the bottom of the set, join partner and dance up through the arch made by 1C to the top, ending in the order 2C, 3C, 4C, 1C.


Princess Royal
8x28 R  3C RSCDS
1-8 1C dance the petronella figure, finishing in 2nd place on partner's side of the set. 2C step up on bars 3-4.
9-16 2C, 1C, 3C six hand round and back.
17-20 retaining hands on the sidelines, 2C, 1C, 3C advance and retire.
21-22 1C cross back to own sides.
23-24 On sidelines, all clap 1, 2, 3; 1,2,3.
25-28 The three men and the three women circle three hands round to the left


Monymusk
8x32 S 3C RSCDS
1-4 1C turn RH and cast to 2nd place.
5-8 1C turn LH 1 1/4 to finish 1W between 2C facing down, 1M between 3C facing up.
9-12 Set in lines of 3 across the dance. On bars 11-12, 1C dance a petronella turn to finish in 2nd place on partner's side of the set.
13-16 All set twice.
17-24 2C, 1C, 3C circle six hands round and back.
25-32 1C pass 1st corner right shoulder to dance six-bar reels of three on the sides. 1C cross RH to own sides on bars 31-32.


Circassian Circle

1-8 All dance rights and lefts
9-16 Set to partners twice and then turn partners with both hands once round.
17-24 Ladies' Chain.
25-32 Poussette to change places with the opposite couple. On bar 25, dancers move in the direction the men are facing (the couples move around each other counter-clockwise).


Waltz Country Dance

1-2 Balance forward and back.
3-4 Travel forward passing opposite by right shoulder to end facing partner.
5-8 Repeat 1-4 but passing partner right shoulder.
9-16 Repeat 1-8 to end in original positions.
17-18 Join hands in a ring and dance forward and back.
19-20 Men swap women on their left over to their right side.
21-32 Repeat 17-20 three more times.
33-40 Take partner in ballroom hold and waltz CCW around and past the other couple to change places. End facing original direction to meet a new couple.


Hooper's Jig
8x32 J 3C MMM II
1-4 All clap. 1C cross, passing right shoulders, and cast off one place.
5-8 1C & 3C dance right hands across.
9-12 All clap. 1C cross, passing right shoulders, and cast up one place.
13-16 1C & 2C dance left hands across.
17-18 1M & 3W change places giving RH.
19-20 1W & 3M change places giving RH while 1M & 3W loop around to the right to face back in.
21-22 3W & 1M change back giving RH while 1M & 3W loop around to the right to face back in.
23-24 3M & 1W change back giving LEFT hands, 1W dancing to 2nd place while 1M casts off and 2C steps up.
25-32 1C & 2C rights and lefts.


Delvine Side
8x32 S 3C

RSCDS 2

1-81C and 2C set to partners, cross passing right shoulders, set, cross back.
9-16 1C down the middle and up.
17-24 1C and 2C allemande, 1C finish facing 1st corners.
25-32 1C turn 1st corners BH, dance round each other passing right shoulders, turn 2nd corners BH and passing right shoulders dance across to own sides in 2nd place.


Eightsome Reel

Part A:
1-8 All circle 8 hands round and back.
9-12 All dance right hands across as couples, with women on the inside and men on the outside of the wheel.
13-16 All dance left hands back as couples, pivoting to place men on the inside and women on the outside of the wheel.
17-24 Set twice to partner and turn (finish facing partner).
25-40 All dance a grand chain (2 bars per hand).
Part B:
1-8 Circle 7 hands round and back with 1W in the middle.
9-16 1W set to & turn her partner, then set to and turn her opposite (3M).
17-24 1W dance a left shoulder reel of 3 with partner and opposite.
25-32 Repeat bars 1-8 of Part B.
33-40 1W set to & turn the man to the right of her partner (2M), then set to and turn the opposite man (4M).
40-48 1W dance a left shoulder reel of 3 with the two men, ending in her original place and 2W ending in the middle of the set.
Repeat Part B seven times with 2W, 3W, 4W, 1M, 2M, 3M, and 4M in the middle.
Repeat Part A.


Light on the Water
8x32 S 3C Let's All Dance
1-8 1C cast down behind own lines for 4 bars and cast back up to place.
9-16 1C, 2C, and 3C dance mirror reels of 3 on the sides, taking hands when meeting partner. 1C dance in and down to begin.
17-24 1C lead down the middle for 2 bars, face each other and set once, lead up to the top and cast to 2nd place. 2C step up on bars 7-8 of the phrase.
25-32 2C, 1C, and 3C joining hands on the sides advance (1 bar) and retire (1 bar), dance back-to-back with partner (4 bars), and turn partner BH once around (2 bars).


De'il Amang the Tailors
8x32 R 3C RSCDS 14
1-4 1C and 2C set and dance right hands across halfway.
5-8 1C and 2C set and dance left hands across back to original places.
9-16 1C lead down the middle and up.
